“AI as Author: Bridging the Gap Between Computational Creativity Techniques and Literary Theory” was a four-year research project (2020–23) supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK).

Hosted by Türkiye’s top-ranked university, Koç University, in the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Istanbul, the project brought into conversation literary studies and Natural Language Generation (NLG) on the subject of creative artificial intelligence (AI). The project proved prescient in anticipating AI’s transformative impact on the writing industry, arguing throughout for the importance of literary and other creative perspectives to the design, application and evaluation of generative AI systems.

Having been awarded the TÜBİTAK 2232 International Fellowship for Outstanding Researchers, the Principal Investigator, Dr Imke van Heerden, joined KU’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the duration of the project. The Senior Researcher, Dr Anil Bas, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Marmara University.
